Frequently Asked Questions

Hair Loss

Lots of factors can cause hair fallout, or thin or patchy hair. You might:

  • be stressed
  • be suffering from traction alopecia (pulling of the hair, for example, tight ponytails or braids)
  • have too much DHT on your scalp, causing hair to weaken and fall
  • have poor circulation so there's not enough blood (carrying important nutrients) reaching your scalp
  • pull out your hair (Trichotillomania)
  • have PCOS (increased DHT)
  • have dietary issues causing hair loss
  • Alopecia

You can speak to your GP about having a blood test or a stool sample checked, but often it's hard to pinpoint one cause! For the majority of reasons, a combination of dermarolling and oiling can help.

DHT is dihydrotestosterone. Both men and women produce testosterone, and sometimes we may have high levels which cause hair loss. This is surprisingly common and it's why Rosemary Oil and Castor Seed Oil are so good for reducing hair loss...they reduce DHT on the scalp!

Conversely, DHT promotes facial hair growth...that's why you find so many bald men who are able to grow a beard! This is why we have a separate hair oil and beard oil, the hair oil contains DHT blockers.

Rice Water Shampoo

Yes, we have customers who use this shampoo on every single hair type.

Yes, the shampoo is used by many customers with LPH. If you've had an adverse reaction to shampoos before we would recommend washing a few strands first to see.

This shampoo does not cause protein overload. If you've had an adverse reaction to shampoos before and are sensitive in terms of the shampoos you use, we would recommend washing a few strands first to see.

No, the amount is minimal (in a quantity of less than 1%) and safe as a cleansing agent, unlike sulfates.

The shampoo contains dimethicone in a quantity of less than 1% - it is there to remove build up of product/environmental stressors. This is a regulated product, we work with a professional cosmetic regulator to obtain safety certificates so nothing in it has been deemed bad for your hair.

Please note, this shampoo is specially formulated for hair growth/reducing hair loss. However, whilst we have had feedback from many customers indicating that it reduces dandruff, a flaky/itchy scalp and even psoriasis, we cannot guarantee results.

About Dermarolling

Everyone is different and so are the reasons for hair loss. But dermarolling has been shown to be an effective tool for hair growth, so there's no reason why it couldn't work for you! Remember results don't happen overnight. You need to commit to using your dermaroller twice a week for at least three months!

We have lots of hair follicles that simply aren't working, because it's not a priority for the body. Dermarolling stimulates these dead hair follicles to grow new hair. It increases blood flow (and therefore sends nutrients) to the area so the hair that grows is thicker, faster growing and healthier. It results in the production of collagen and elastin which achieves the same results.

The dermaroller is a tool with hundreds of tiny needles...but it's not as scary as it sounds! You control the pressure so there is no reason for it to hurt. As you get used to it, you'll find areas of your skin that are more sensitive (for me - my edges!) so I will press down more gently on these areas. I receive messages from people on a daily basis, telling me how pleasantly surprised they were by the fact that it was painless.

Of course this may not be the case for everyone, but you have the option of applying less pressure, or only focusing on your problem area rather than the whole of your scalp.

No more than every four days/twice a week. People tend to get carried away and start dermarolling daily, but this is actually bad for your scalp and hair! I always refer to my favourite analogy: it's like a gym routine! If you train your legs every day, you will injure them. But when you have rest days in between, your muscles will recover & grow! The same applies to dermarolling - the healing period is what makes it work!

No, daily use can cause scabbing and scarring.

Time to results vary as everyone is different. However scientifically, new hair takes three months to grow. My personal experience as an alopecia sufferer was that my hair had grown back after six months. Take regular photos and you'll start to notice small changes like the hairs poking out of the follicles and baby hairs!

This is very normal when you first start dermarolling. As you get used to it, you'll find the skin is less itchy and flaky. To counter the flakiness, always oil after dermarolling. You can apply a small amount of oil to your fingertips (to avoid your hair looking greasy!) and rub it on the area the next day too. Itchiness is only temporary and it means it's working...when the skin heals that's when the hair will start to grow!

This is normal and should stop itself but it could indicate that you're pressing too hard. Use lighter pressure next time. You don't need to press hard to see results! Apply oil and massage the area. The Rice Water Shampoo & Conditioner can also help with a flaky scalp.

Unfortunately you cannot dermaroll if you suffer from any skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis, no matter how mild. Please avoid using the dermaroller on broken or irritated skin. We recommend speaking to a dermatologist or your GP about what else you can try.

Wait 7 days before and after dyeing your hair to use the dermaroller again.

Some hair follicles are at 0.5mm, but most are at 1.0mm. A 1.0mm roller is more effective for growth.

Longer needles require more caution and less frequent use. A 1.0mm roller is just as effective and safer to use.

Using your Dermaroller

Start at the top of your head and hold your hair down, so you are working as close to the scalp as possible. Roll over the area 3 or 4 times in the direction of hair growth. You control the pressure so if it's painful, press down less!

If you have long hair, section your hair as if you are going to straighten/curl it. This will avoid the dermaroller getting tangled in your hair and it means the dermaroller will touch your scalp.

Full instructions can be found on your box too.

Roll the dermaroller over each area, in the direction of hair growth. You control the pressure so if it's painful, press down less!

Full instructions can be found on your box too.

Around 5 minutes. You don't need to spend longer than this rolling over your scalp again and again. Roll over each section 2-3 times, that's more than enough to see results.

Apply oil immediately after dermarolling for maximum absorption.

Dermarolling causes little pin pricks to the scalp and the hair follicles. When we let the area recover, blood flows to the area and elastin and collagen are produced. These things promote the growth of thicker, healthier new hair. By over-using your dermaroller, you are not giving the area sufficient time to heal. This is counter productive.

YES! Please read the box your dermaroller comes in. It has tips for you including:

  • Wash your hair 2-3 times a week (if you can). Use your dermaroller plus oil on your hair wash days.
  • Take Biotin & Zinc supplements
  • Avoid tight ponytails or things that can cause pressure alopecia.
  • If you wear a hijab all day, try to wash your undercap regularly or opt for a satin or breathable undercap.
  • Use our specially formulated scalp oil, or any DHT blocking oil (Rosemary or Castor) straight after dermarolling to prevent further hair loss.
  • If you can, always oil after dermarolling!

Replace it every 3 months, or sooner if it becomes gunky.

You'll start to see baby hairs. Hair growth cycles take about 3 months, so expect to see growth in 3-6 months. If there's no growth after 6 months, the follicles might be dead, not dormant, and a transplant might be necessary.

Yes, to support new hair growth and reduce DHT on the scalp.

No, it's unhygienic due to dead skin build-up.

Hair Oil

Leaving oil on the scalp overnight can attract impurities and clog follicles, as numerous studies suggest. It's better to wash it out after 4 hours. However, you can leave oil on the ends of your hair for as long as you like.

Yes, but it should be an oil containing DHT blockers to reduce hair loss.

The ingredients are completely different. Beard and hair growth mechanisms vary, so the oils are formulated differently.

No, because DHT causes hair loss on the scalp but promotes facial hair growth. Using scalp oil, which contains DHT blockers like rosemary or castor oil, on the beard can be counterproductive.

The dermarolling/oil combination is key. Dermarolling opens up your hair follicles so they can absorb much more of the oil.

Normally when we oil our scalp, our follicles will only absorb 10-15%. It is very hard for dead follicles to absorb oil. This changes when we dermaroll, we start to see 70% oil absorption!

Our oil is specially formulated for growth. It contains a dropper so you can focus on scalp application. It will condition and hydrate your hair if you apply it to the ends, but it's better not to waste it! We recommend applying it directly to your scalp and massaging it in. Then putting a hair mask/leave in conditioner or another oil on the lengths of your hair.

Sanitising Spray

Cleaning your dermaroller is essential for hygiene and to prevent infections. A proper sanitising spray is recommended over hand sanitizer or boiling water.

Satin Undercap

It reduces friction under your hijab, improving scalp health and allowing better hair growth, making hair appear thicker.
